To this day, the peaceful settlement negotiated in Johannesburg is hailed as one of the greatest achievements in modern political history. And while South Africa’s remarkable journey from apartheid to democracy has been documented extensively, the full history of the development of the ‘new’ South African flag has never been published.
Flying with Pride is the story of the South African flag. This story covers a short, but intense period from August 1993 until May 1994. It is only eight months, but eight important months that would forever change the DNA of South Africa as a country.
This full-colour 112-page hardcover commemorative book looks at how the people of South Africa have embraced the flag and used it for anything from company logos to pendants, from hard hats to bow ties and let’s not forget our great export to the world – the Vuvuzela! It also includes the fascinating (and often humorous) stories right from when the Multi-Party Negotiating Council created a commission to look at National Symbols, until it first flew in 1994.
To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the birth of democracy in South Africa, this version of Flying with Pride includes a retrospective of some of the momentous occasions where the flag has been proudly displayed.
