It’s hard to believe that 2019 marks the 25th anniversary of the first democratic elections in South Africa.

To this day, the peaceful settlement negotiated in Johannesburg is hailed as one of the greatest achievements in modern political history. And while South Africa’s remarkable journey from apartheid to democracy has been documented extensively, the full history of the development of the “new” South African flag has never been published.

Flying with Pride is the story of the South African flag. This story covers a short, but intense period from August 1993 until April 1994 – eight important months that would forever change the DNA of South Africa as a country.

Hoisted for the first time at one-minute past midnight on the 27th of April 1994, the flag was so enthusiastically embraced that few realise that this flag did not even exist some three months before the elections. It was only by the dedicated efforts of a small group (and the famous South African “can-do” attitude), that a jumble of ideas and colours became one of the most recognised flags in the world.

Just as the Multi-Party Negotiating Council asked the public in 1993 to submit their designs for the new flag, we are inviting you to submit your photos for inclusion in Flying with Pride.  All photos selected will be fully credited and those photographers will each receive an autographed copy of the book.

Photos should be of high quality and no less than 1.5 MB or larger than 10 MB when compressed in jpeg format. We also accept images in PDF, eps and tiff format.

The cut-off date for submissions is 9 August 2019.

Flying with Pride looks at how the people of South Africa have embraced the flag and used it for anything from company logos to matches, from hard hats to boxes of matches and let’s not forget our great export to the world – the Vuvuzela!

With loads of photos and drawings, Flying with Pride
documents stories such as the call for public submissions,
the flood of ideas and comments (both good and bad),
the contributions of the advertising agencies and the final
design as approved by the Multi-Party Negotiating Council
in 1994.

The book also explains the history and importance of flags in the modern world. In addition, various contributors look at the use of the flag in branding, other flag initiatives and the intricacies of manufacturing a flag.

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the birth of democracy in South Africa, this version of Flying with Pride includes a retrospective of some of the momentous occasions where the flag has been proudly displayed.
